Hence, depending on my own perspective and position, I have developed a leadership model which I think will be helpful for leading the employees of my workplace. Multiculturalism, teamwork and the leadership theories can be identified as a few major references of a leadership model. In the context of my company ABC, we have teams with members belonging from different cultural background and the company is following a transactional leadership. It is adversely affecting the team morale and culture of the organization. Hence, I suggest a leadership model, which will encourage participation, motivation and innovation. For my personal leadership model, I have selected the democratic leadership attitude, visionary pioneering and motivational guidance as the three core abilities for my leadership model. Discussion: A leadership model talks about the traits and characters of a leader. I personally recommend a model, which is organized upon the vision and relationship. As the leaders need to direct his subordinates, an effective leadership model needs to focus on creating team morale, open communication and vision for the future. With an effective bonding and a clear vision, the team members will be able to contribute to organizational as well as personal growth. Leadership is important in promoting multiculturalism in an organization. It talks about diversity in the work force. My leadership model will promote diversity by obtaining the strategy of democratic participation in the decisional making process. On the other hand, teamwork and co-ordination in the team is important for the success of an organization, the motivational and participatory leadership pattern of the proposed leadership model will uphold co-ordination in the teamwork. Last but not the least, the leadership theories like, the Great Man Theory, Trait Theory, Behavioural Theories, Contingency Theories, Transactional Theories, Transformational Theories and others are the guidelines for leaders. The Desired Traits of Leader: According to my opinion, I will love to have a leader who will be a visionary and focus on the relationship issues within the team members. As mentioned by Trujillo and Scott (2014) a transformational leader is someone who is committed to a vision and they try to empower others to achieve that vision. According to me, it is must have quality for an effective leader. A leader needs to be the pioneer of new trend. He has to be a man of future whom others can rely upon. Moreover, a leadership model must focus on the democratic decision-making. As opined by Tiftik et al. (2015) a democratic leader considers the opinion of the team members while taking a decision. According to me, a leader needs make the team members feel that their opinion matters to the company. Hence, having a democratic and open attitude is a must-have quality for a leader. As opined by Spector (2014) when a leader encourages his team members to take part in the decision-making, it makes them more engaged in the team activities. Moreover, a leader needs to be committed to his responsibilities and team members. It sets an example for the team members and they find someone whom they can look upon for their professional growth. The Core Values: Very leadership model has some core values. These are the cornerstones of that particular leadership model. My leadership model can be identified as an amalgamation of the transformational and democratic leadership theory. The core value of my leadership model can be as follows: Community Collaboration: I have identified relationship building as one of the major key skills of an effective leader. Hence, it is fundamental for a leader to establish a sense of community via collaboration with peers among the team members. In the multicultural world of business, crating co-operation and co-ordination is essential for effective management of a team. As discussed by Bush (2014) an effective leader needs to create co-operative environment within a multicultural group to eliminate the cultural clashes and uphold the advantages of diversity within the work force. (2015) a democratic leader needs to identify the future leader and allocate responsibility by showing the faith upon him by saying I know you can do this. However, he needs to identify the skills and area of interests delegate responsibilities accordingly. As a leader of a multi cultural team, he needs to identify the cultural and ethnic orientation of the employees and respect those to promote diverse point of views to solve any issue (Shriberg et al. 2002). Open Communication: With open communication and sharing of information, the leader will achieve desired level of trust from the subordinates (Shriberg et al. 2002). Moreover, it will also help the employees identify and speculate the future for their organizational and personal growth. Utility of the Discussed Model: In the context of my own organization, where the team consists of members with varied cultural identities and my model of leadership will encourage participation and increased team morale. As my organization is following a transactional leadership model, the employees are bound to maintain the protocol and there is no space for innovation. In opposition to this, my leadership model will encourage people to provide innovative idea to solve an organizational issue. Moreover, it will provide increase participation from the employees and it will ensure employee satisfaction and decreased cases of employee turnover (Shriberg et al. 2002). It will promote a culture of creativity within the organizat ion. The Goals of my Leadership Model: In my workplace, I have felt an issue with motivation and participation. My leadership model will strive to achieve, including all the team members in the decision-making process. Hence, my leadership model will try to motivate the employees to come up with innovative ideas for solving a certain problem. Difference Between my Model and the Existing Leadership Pattern: My workplace follows a transactional leadership strategy. In my workplace the leaders focus on the role of supervision and the responsibility of any catastrophe is always of the employees. It uses the rewards and punishments for motivating the followers. It is typically focused on the attainment of planning and its execution (Shriberg et al. 2002). Naturally, the employees do not feel a democratic culture within the organization. It is discouraging their innovative faculty and satisfaction level. However, my idea of leadership will be completely different from it. My leadership model will encourage motivation and directing the behaviour of the employees to achieve a shard goal. As the members will get the opportunity to share opinion and innovate strategies to meet the goals, it will encourage them to achieve success. As a leader, I will need to put my trust on them. With motivating the employees my leadership model will promote the leaders of future. The nature of my leadership model will be proactive. As, discussed earlier, by emphasizing on the morals, values, needs, and ideals of the followers my leadership model will encourage a changed organizational culture. Application of my Model: To apply this model of leadership, I need to wait for a situation, which will need the management to opt for a new strategic policy. In such a situation, I will try to create a democratic environment within my team and ask for innovative suggestions from their end. It will encourage creativity and innovation within the organization. Moreover, in a complex situation I will communicate personally and openly with my team members and make them believe on the vision for future. I must follow the strategy of guiding but let the team members solve their problems. In addition, unlike the current leadership, I will accept my responsibility if any task goes wrong. My team members will not be blamed or discouraged for the innovative strategies they have opted for. Conclusion: A transformational leadership creates a positive change within the human resource of the organization. On the other hand, the democratic leaders promote participation, transparency and open communication within the organization. For the duration of this time period, the American dream was no longer about hard work and reaching a set goal, it had become materialistic and immoral. Many people that had honest and incorruptible dreams, such as Jay Gatsby, used corrupted pathways to realize their fantasy. Peopleââ¬â¢s carelessness was shown through their actions and speech towards others. Fitzgerald uses characterization and symbolism from different characters and items to convey the corruption of the American dream. Fitzgerald expresses the corruption of the American dream through the use of characterization of different characters. Daisy is one of the few characters that could get what she wanted but does not because of her own rules. She has set standards that she would not lower for anyone, even those she loves. The Jazz age had many flaws, inconsiderate actions was a major flaw. Her carelessness shows her attitude towards others. ââ¬Å"Her eyes fell on Jordan and me with a sort of appeal, as though she realized at last what she was doingââ¬âand as though she had never, all along, intended doing anything at all.â⬠Daisy had just realized that the affair between Gatsby and herself was real to him. She was insulting his American dream of having her, therefore she was corrupted. When she was with Gatsby she lived in a daydream, carefree and happy, as she says ââ¬Å"Look at that,â⬠she whispered, and then after a moment: ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢d like to just get one of those pink clouds and put you in it and push you around.â⬠Daisy just states her fantasy, she wants Gatsby, but in reality she knows she cannot have him, consequently she again insults Gatsbyââ¬â¢s hope of having her. Fit... ...pectacles which pass over a nonexistent nose.â⬠The all seeing eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg see through the corrupt colored eye glasses. God was watching all the dishonesty take place and those who did wrong were punished. In the novel The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald used characterization and symbolism to exemplify the corruption of the American dream during the post World War One era. Pre-war society had not grown out to big urban cities and the fast world of the east coast. As WWI commenced, many Americans had to go to cities and work in factories, including women. As a wartime measure women were granted the right to vote which gave women freedom. As a result after the World War, many Americans lived in the cities, where the corruption and infidelity began. The American dream was being soiled, the uphill battle that had once existed to success was no more.

In this assignment the external environment encompassing Porterââ¬â¢s 5 Forces and PESTEL are examined along with itsââ¬â¢ impact and influence on Singhââ¬â¢s SWOT and stakeholders expectation. PESTEL analysis of Singhââ¬â¢s Awareness of the external environment and how they impact on the company can be summarised using the PESTEL framework. The PESTEL can define the key drivers of change. These key drivers of change have differential impacts on industries, markets and organisations. 3.1 Political Singhââ¬â¢s is a privately owned company but because the company buys and rents vehicles they would be involved with few governmental organizations for various purposes. Ministry of Transport for licensing of new vehicles For vehicle transfers Ministry of Finance To approve any tariffs Duties or charges for purchases Taxes (including staff salaries) Customs and Excise Importing, duties and clearance of all vehicles Ministry of Legal Affairs To register the company legally To ensure all licenses to operate as a limited liability company 3.2 Economical As a private owned company, Singhââ¬â¢s has to watch for what affect his company financially from the external environment. Key factors can be; Fuel rates ââ¬â have rates gone increased or decreased, this would determine how to price the rentals. Exchange rates for foreign currency. Salary negotiations in the country- would the employees demand high wages as a result of salary negotiations for government workers. Available and accepted methods of payment ââ¬â cheque, cash, VISA, MasterCard. Unemployment rates in the country . 3.3 Social These influences the length of time a vehicle would be rented for. Singhââ¬â¢s offers long term rentals (6 months to 3 years) and short term rentals (1 day to 6 months). Social factors include; Changing cultures ââ¬â peak periods for local rentals (wedding and carnival) and peak periods for foreign rentals (tourists are drawn to the Caribbean during winter and summer). Demographics ââ¬â age groups of drivers. Community interests ââ¬â lobby groups, charitable organisations etcâ⬠¦ 3.4 Technological In a business such as Singhââ¬â¢s one would encourage technology to play a role in the data collection, storage and distribution of the companyââ¬â¢s fleet of vehicles. Technological factors includeââ¬â¢ Computerised scanning of vehicles under maintenance. Computerised database systems used for documentation, data collection, billing, accounting and ordering. Communication methods have to be of the highest quality in order to reach out to customers (the business to customer approach). Updated websites, facebook pages or other social search engines used to advertise the company. 3.5 Environmental Influences from the direct environment that may affect Singhââ¬â¢s might be Waste disposal ââ¬â for waste disposal from the garage (oil, parts etcâ⬠¦) Energy consumption ââ¬âthe amount of energy or power used in a process or system. Weather conditions- may only affect the infrastructural aspect of Singhââ¬â¢s in terms of weathering on vehicles which are not kept covered over a long period. 3.6 Legal The legal aspects of the company and how it influences the strategies and objectives. Governmental laws ââ¬â a law might state that no one under the age of 18 is allowed to drive. Policies ââ¬â policies put in place by the board of directors and the key shareholders to determine how the business is going to operate. Rental contracts have to be done up and signed by each party for every transaction. Insurance companies vying to insure the fleet of vehicles. 4. Stakeholders Stakeholders can exist both internally and externally. In an industry such as the vehicle rental industry the stakeholders are very important. SWOT (Internal / External Analysis of Singhââ¬â¢s) In an effort to ascertain its competitive environment a SWOT analysis of Singhââ¬â¢s can assist to devise a sound strategic plan. The intent is to exploit and maximize the strengths and opportunities; avert threatening circumstances through tactical responses and provide institutional upgrade to lessen weaknesses; all these towards a position of profitability and value creation. As defined by (Alzoubi 2004) SWOT Analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) is a general framework for directing and assisting strategic planners to identify the appropriate organizational strategies to achieve their goals. Managers look at SWOT analysis as a technique to help managers to identify and plan the business goals, and draw the strategies to achieve them (Alzoubi 2013 p.126). Singhââ¬â¢s Strategic Based Units (SBUââ¬â¢s) SBUââ¬â¢s allow large corporations such as Singhââ¬â¢s and SSS to vary their strategies according to the different needs of the various external markets they serve. The effect of Porterââ¬â¢s 5 Forces on Singhââ¬â¢s Porterââ¬â¢s 5 forces analysis can be applied to Singhââ¬â¢s as a tool to analyse the competitive advantages of the company. According to Porter (1980), rivalry (competition) on the market is result of the five variables or main forces: rivalry level, bargaining power of customers and that of suppliers, the threat from new entrants and substitute products. The following was deduced from the analysis of the five forces: 7.1. Threat of New Entry Due to lack of policies to prevent new entry, the market is open for new entrants. Singhââ¬â¢s will now have to develop and maintain a cost advantage and differentiation of its services, to gain sustainable competitive advantage. Economies of scale ââ¬â it would be expensive to for new entrants to match Singhââ¬â¢s because of the level the company has reached in the industry, it would be difficult for new entrants to match them. Experience ââ¬â new entrants would be inexperienced in most of the ââ¬Ëknow howââ¬â¢ of this industry and that lack of experience can give Singhââ¬â¢s the advantage over a new entrant (See Appendix II). 7.2. Threat of Substitution Substitutes can come not only from within the industry but also from outside. Managers often focus on their own industry and neglect the threat posed by substitutes for the product or service. The price/performance ratio is critical. Even if the substitute is more expensive the substitute is still effective (see appendix II). 7.3. Buyer Power Singhââ¬â¢s needs to pay attention to the customers and the price they pay for the service. If the price is too high customers may seek to do business elsewhere which will force the company to drop prices, thus losing revenue (see appendix II). 7.4 Suppliers Power- It was recognised that the business can be adversely affected if suppliers drive up their prices, then the concept of low cost to gain competitive advantage will be affected (see appendix I1) 7.5 Competitive Rivalry- From the analysis it was evident that the company had rivals performing a similar service. To prevent customers from moving from Singhââ¬â¢s to the competitors, the company will need to provide unique services to its customers (see appendix II). 8. Competitors Singhââ¬â¢s entered the market as an entrepreneur in 1972, competitors from then to now would be companies established around or before that time penetrating the same market with similar objectives. One such example would be Southern Sales and Service Company Limited (SSS). Both companies entered the corporate market to try to gain market share. SSS has a larger vehicle fleet than Singhââ¬â¢s but SSS does not provide some of the tour guide services or 25 seat bus retreat services that Singhââ¬â¢s caters for. Even though they are in similar industries, they each cater to a different sector within the market. Refer to Appendix III for a visual on how competitive advantage works in an industry as Singhââ¬â¢s. 9. Competitive advantage Singhââ¬â¢s has over SSS: SSS Caters for company rentals and corporate rentals Provides car and driver services Provides maintenance for some vehicles and outsources the rest Cost- mostly high priced unit rental Energy consumption is high Singhââ¬â¢s Caters for tour groups and tourist transportation Provides car and driver services Provides transportation services from airport to hotel and return Provides rental packages for weddings with a driver Prices are relatively low and are negotiable Various branches throughout the country so customers can do business from any branch Customer service is ranked very high 10. Conclusion A strong networking capability (Strength) has lead to an expansion in the business activities of Singhââ¬â¢s (opportunity) and this has resulted in increased profits due to long term leasing by various ministries (strength). The strength of networking was cultivated over a period of time and once established, it can sustain Singhââ¬â¢s for the next five (5) years. Singhââ¬â¢sà external environment has room for new entrants and a lot of possible threats and opportunities that can arise, however, with proper strategic management and well trained staff this company can continue to push forward in this market and even make a breakthrough in a new one. Recommendations Continue to evaluate Singhââ¬â¢s regularly. Always know where the company is in relation to its competitors. Capitalise on new technologies and trade in old techniques. Monitor staff and their talents, do regular training to update them on the current techniques being used by competitors so that they can be brought up to speed or even one step ahead. Increase profitability by looking into marketing and advertising to the larger companies such as energy companies (BPTT and Atlantic LNG) to try to gain greater market share, this is an opportunity within their SWOT analysis. Consider upgrading the fleet and maybe adding some luxury type vehicles, look at the threat of buyers and see what the customers are asking for. Customers may be willing to spend their money on luxury cars from a rental company they trust. Quotes From the Louisa Ma Alcott Novel Little Women
Little Women is a classic novel by Louisa May Alcott. Based on her own experiences growing up with three sisters, the novel is Alcotts best-known worksà and presents many of her personal viewpoints. This novel is something of a conundrum for feminist scholars because while it portrays a strong female heroine (Jo March, an analog for Alcott herself), the ideals of hard work and sacrifice and the ultimate goal of marriage seem to stymie true individual rebellion from any of the March sisters.à Here areà a few of the quotes that show the contradictions in the themes of independence and feminism in Little Women.à March Familys Money Problems Christmas wont be Christmas without any presents. Jo March. Right out of the gate, Alcott shows the March familyââ¬â¢s precarious financial situationà and gives a glimpse into each of the sistersââ¬â¢ personalities. The only one who doesnââ¬â¢t complain about the lack of Christmas gifts is Beth (spoiler alert: much later in the novel, Beth dies, giving readers a mixed message about the virtues of sacrifice).à None of Alcotts characters ever raise the question of why Mr. March keeps returning to his post as a war chaplain even though his wife and daughters are close to destitute. Virtue and Pride in Little Women Alcott had strong, unyielding views on proper behavior. Im not Meg tonight, Im a doll who does all sorts of crazy things. Tomorrow I shall put away my fuss and feathers and be desperately good again. Megs wealthy friends dress her up to attend a ball, she flirts and drinks champagne. When Laurie sees her he expresses his disapproval. She tells him to lighten up, but later feels ashamed and confesses to her mother that she behaved badly A poor girl getting to enjoy a party hardly seems like the worst possible behavior, but the moral code of Alcotts novel is strict. Marriage in Little Women The reality for women in the 19th century who were not wealthy was either marry a wealthy man or work as a governess or teacher to support their parents. Despite her somewhat radical feminist views, Alcotts characters do little to deviate from this norm in the end.à Money is a needful and precious thing,--and, when well used, a noble thing,--but I never want you to think it is the first or only prize to strive for. Id rather see you poor mens wives, if you were happy, beloved, contented than queens on thrones, without self-respect and peace. -Marmee. The March sisters mother seems to be telling her daughters not to marry for the sake of money or statusà but doesnââ¬â¢t suggest that thereââ¬â¢s any alternative to marriage.à If this is a feminist message, itââ¬â¢s a seriously dated and confused one.à You have grown abominably lazy, and you like gossip, and waste time on frivolous things, you are contented to be petted and admired by silly people, instead of being loved and respected by wise ones. Amy lets Laurie have it, and this moment of brutal honesty is the beginning of their romantic relationship. Of course, Laurie is still pining over Jo at this point, but Amyââ¬â¢s words seem to straighten him out. This is sort of a pivotal quote from ââ¬Å"Little Women,â⬠because it reflects Alcottââ¬â¢s personal views about vanity, gossip and the like.à Trying to Tame Jo March Much of Little Women is spent describing how Jos stubborn, headstrong behavior needs to be subdued.à Ill try and be what he loves to call me, a little woman, and not be rough and wild; but do my duty here instead of wanting to be somewhere else. - Jo March. Poor Jo has to suppress her natural personality (or try to) in order to please her parents. Itââ¬â¢s easy to infer that Alcott may have been projecting a little bit here; her father, Branson Alcott, was a transcendentalist and preached strict Protestant values to his four daughters.à An old maid, thats what Im to be. A literary spinster, with a pen for a spouse, a family of stories for children, and twenty years hence a morsel of fame, perhaps... Jo says it, but this is yet another example of Alcottââ¬â¢s voice coming through her main protagonist. Some literary scholars have interpreted this and some of Joââ¬â¢s other ââ¬Å"tomboyishâ⬠points of view to indicate a homosexual subtext, which would have been taboo for a novel of this era. But in another instance Jo laments Megââ¬â¢s impending marriage, saying: ââ¬Å"I just wish I could marry Meg myself and keep her safe in the family.â⬠Whether intended or not, to a modern reader, Joââ¬â¢s personality and resistance to being paired with a man (at least in the early chapters) do indicate the possibility that she was uncertain about her sexuality.
